Mateusz Tomica

Mateusz Tomica is a Polish pianist and laureate of numerous prestigious piano competitions in Poland and abroad. Recent achievements include winning the first prize at the 14th International Chopin Competition in Mariánské Lázně (2025) and the second prize with a special award for the best performance of mazurkas at the 12th International Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Darmstadt (2022).

Born in Katowice in 1997, Mateusz Tomica began his musical education at the age of seven at the Stanisław Moniuszko Primary Music School under Janina Gawron. Continuing his studies at the Karol Szymanowski Secondary Music School in Katowice, he trained with Monika Sikorska-Wojtacha and Hubert Salwarowski. Further education included the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice under Magdalena Lisak and Hubert Salwarowski, as well as the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna in the class of Jan Jiracek von Arnim. Additional studies were completed at the Bern University of the Arts with Prof. Tomasz Herbut and at the Zurich University of the Arts with Prof. Konstantin Scherbakov.

Over the years, numerous prizes have marked his competition career. In 2011, Mateusz Tomica was awarded first prize at the International Competition for Young Artists “21st Century Art” in Vienna. Two years later, he received third prize at the IV Halina and Ludwik Stefański Chopin Piano Tournament in Krakow. A further milestone was second prize at the XXII International Fryderyk Chopin Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia (2014). He later reached the finals of the 2nd Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition in Katowice (2023) and of the National Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (2025).

Refining his skills through masterclasses with world-renowned pianists including Dmitri Bashkirov, Andrzej Jasiński, Dang Thai Son, Wojciech Świtała, Kevin Kenner, Ewa Pobłocka, Nikolai Demidenko, Piotr Anderszewski, and Janusz Olejniczak, Mateusz Tomica also collaborated with prominent artists such as Marek Pijarowski, Michał Nesterowicz, Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk, Eckart Manke, Jacek Kraszewski, Łukasz Dyczko, Joanna Goranko, and the Apollon Musagète Quartet.

Mateusz Tomica regularly masters his skills by participating in masterclasses conducted by world-renowned artists such as Dimitri Bashkirov, Andrzej Jasiński, Dang Thai Son, Wojciech Świtała, Kevin Kenner, Ewa Pobłocka, Nikolai Demidenko, Piotr Anderszewski, and Janusz Olejniczak. He has also collaborated with eminent artists such as Marek Pijarowski, Michał Nesterowicz, Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk, Eckart Manke, Jacek Kraszewski, Łukasz Dyczko, Joanna Goranko, and the Apollon Musagète Quartet.

International appearances have taken him to Poland, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, and Austria. Notable performances include recitals at the “Preludium” of the 75th Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdrój, the Chopin Festival in Mariánské Lázně, the KAWAI Concert Series in Hamburg, as well as concerts at the Royal Łazienki Park, the Birthplace of Fryderyk Chopin in Żelazowa Wola, and the NOSPR in Katowice. Leading orchestras with which he has performed include the National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of the National Philharmonic, the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, the Silesian Philharmonic, and the Silesian Chamber Orchestra.

Mateusz Tomica is recipient of scholarships from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (ESKAS), He has also dedicated himself to teaching since 2024, leading his own piano class at the Music Conservatory in Bern.
