Mateusz Tomica

Polish pianist and laureate of numerous awards in prestigious piano competitions both in Poland and abroad. His recent achievements include second prize at the 12th International Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Darmstadt in 2022, where he also received a special prize for the best performance of Fryderyk Chopin’s mazurkas, participation in the finals of the 2nd International Karol Szymanowski Music Competition in Katowice (2023), as well as in the National Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (2020).

Born in 1997 in Katowice, he began his musical education at the age of seven with Janina Gawron at the Stanisław Moniuszko Primary Music School, continuing at the Karol Szymanowski Secondary Music School in Katowice in the piano class of Monika Sikorska-Wojtacha and Hubert Salwarowski. He completed his studies at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, where he studied with Magdalena Lisak and Hubert Salwarowski. He also studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna in the class of Jan Jiracek von Arnim. Additionally, he is a graduate of the Bern University of the Arts, where he studied under Prof. Tomasz Herbut. He is currently continuing his studies at the Zurich University of the Arts in Switzerland with Prof. Konstantin Scherbakov.

Over the years, Mateusz Tomica has won numerous prizes and distinctions in various competitions. In 2011, he took first prize at the International Competition for Young Performers “21st Century Art” in Vienna. In 2013, he won third prize in the 4th Halina and Ludwik Stefański Chopin Piano Tournament in Krakow. Another success followed with second prize at the 22nd International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia in 2014.

Mateusz Tomica regularly masters his skills by participating in masterclasses conducted by world-renowned artists such as Dimitri Bashkirov, Andrzej Jasiński, Dang Thai Son, Wojciech Świtała, Kevin Kenner, Ewa Pobłocka, Nikolai Demidenko, Piotr Anderszewski, and Janusz Olejniczak. He has also collaborated with eminent artists such as Marek Pijarowski, Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk, Eckart Manke, Jacek Kraszewski, Łukasz Dyczko, Joanna Goranko, and the Apollon Musagète Quartet.

Mateusz Tomica has performed in many countries, including Poland, Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Austria. His significant performances include recitals during the “Preludium” of the 75th Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdrój, the Chopin Festival in Mariánské Lázně, the KAWAI Concert Series in Hamburg, the Weseler Klaviersommer in Wesel, and at the Royal Łazienki Park, the Fryderyk Chopin Birthplace in Żelazowa Wola, and the NOSPR in Katowice. He has also performed with renowned orchestras such as the National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, the Southwest German Philharmonic Orchestra of Konstanz, the Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, and the Silesian Chamber Orchestra.

Mateusz Tomica is a scholarship recipient of the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Federal Scholarship Commission ESKAS in Switzerland. Since August 2024, he has also been engaged in teaching, leading his own piano class at the Bern Conservatory of Music.
